Third Year, PGY-3
Leading, teaching, and personalizing your path during the senior year

The senior year is a time to bring everything together: your clinical experiences, teaching skills, and leadership development. As a senior resident, you will play a central role in the education and supervision of junior residents and medical students, while also having the flexibility to tailor your schedule to your career goals and interests
Team leadership and teaching: Senior residents supervise across a variety of clinical settings, including BCH Pediatric Hospital Medicine, Pulmonology, PIMCU, BCH Urgent Care, and the BMC Ward. Categorical residents typically spend more of their supervisory time at BCH, while LEAD residents often spend more time at BMC. We make every effort to honor individual preferences when assigning supervisory roles, allowing you to grow in the environments where you feel most inspired and effective.

Individualized curriculum and academic development: The senior year includes protected time for you to explore your personal and professional interests through electives and the 12-week Academic Development Block. This block is a dedicated time for senior residents to pursue research, medical education, policy or advocacy projects aligned with their future career goals. Whether you are interested in writing a manuscript, designing a new elective curriculum, working with a community partner, or diving into health policy, this is your chance to focus deeply on what matters most to you. Our residents have used this time in countless creative and impactful ways.
Call-free time: All senior residents have approximately 6 weeks of call-free time throughout the year. This built-in flexibility provides the space to recharge and make the most of your final year of residency, whether that means focusing on electives, research, or professional development.
