Advocacy

Intern works on Boston Fresh Truck during advocacy afternoon

The Advocacy rotation provides interns with opportunities to explore and understand the communities they will serve throughout residency through several emersive experiences.

During two 2-week rotations, interns participate in a seminar series addressing several para-clinical topics, with topics including poverty and racism, legislative advocacy, care of immigrant children, social media advocacy, complex care in the home, and many others. These topics are brought to life participating in community-based experiences. These include, but are not limited to, shadowing a staff member at their continuity clinic (e.g., nutritionist, lactation counselor, interpreter), spending time a community organization (e.g., WIC office, food pantry, local YMCA), attending a community event (e.g., town hall, City Council Meeting). Finally, residents begin a longitudinal advocacy project in an area of interest. These have ranged from developing dot-phrases for discharge summaries in non-English languages to developing a clinical tool to promote healthy screen media use.
